Filipino Community Gathering in Nottingham, United Kingdom- 3rd Nottingham Barrio Fiesta Celebration

It is always a comfort to see your Filipino comrades especially when your are working as an OFW. These gatherings enable us to share thoughts and exchange ideas so we learn from each other. On 20-21Aug, the Filipino community in Nottingham celebrated its 3rd Barrio Fiesta, an annual gathering of Filipinos in the East Midlands to showcase their support to one another and to remind everyone that camaraderie is always in our hearts even if we are miles away from our beloved home land, the Philippines. The venue was held at Melbourne Park Aspley, Nottingham.

The celebration is for 2 days with lots of entertainment, advertisements, promotions, display of our favorite Filipino dishes as well as pasalubong and delicacies. We only went on the first day and we enjoyed the experience. The venue was well organized, from the entrance, to the programs and displays, there is nothing much you can demand for. We even got special prizes before we left for answering a trivia they presented. The trivia question was “it is a known Filipino dessert” and we undoubtedly answered “Halo-halo!”. The staffs in the booths are very helpful and cheerful and they we had a good laugh. We have also seen British, Indian and other nationalities in there celebrating with us which was very welcoming.

We wish to stay longer so we can witness the rest of the programs but given our tight schedule, we have to leave within the day. For what I have read and heard, they are having a beauty pageant on this event and the coronation will be on the 2nd day, pity we have not enough time to experience it. But overall, we are happy that we attended. Such event helps you realize that you are not alone working in the United Kingdom and that other Filipinos are there working hard too. We thank the staffs, the sponsors, the organizers and the best of the best cooks during the event. Although the prices of the dishes are expensive (to be honest) but I would love to shell extra pounds just to eat that Turon, Biko, Kakanin, Litson and Filipino goceries!
