Why did I return to Philippine Nursing? A Filipino Nurse’s experience and explanation

I am one of the Philippine Nurses who is working abroad in the United Kingdom. I want to tell my story and the reason behind I went back to Philippine Nursing. I used to be a Travel Agent in Saudi Arabia serving for about 8 years. The decision to go back to nursing is inspired by my wife. She was looking at some job posts in www.workabroad.ph circa 2017 and 2018. She noticed that the minimum requirement of being in the job is 6 months to 1 year. This surprised us both as few years ago, the requirement is 3 years to 5 years. My wife then encouraged me to go back to my profession and retire in the future as a nurse. I have listened to my wife and accepted the challenge. We gave up my career in Saudi Arabia and went back to Philippines to practice nursing. It was totally new to me, the technicalities, the jargons, everything was a foreign to me.

The following are my guides in getting back to the nursing career.

  • Workabroad.ph
  • CV
  • Training in St. Lukes- BLS and ACLS
  • Application to Makati Medical Center

I enrolled myself in St. Lukes Hospital Quezon City for BLS and ACLS. This is to equip myself and get ready with the skills and knowledge. I have also purchased 2 NCLEX books to have a read through on nursing and to update my self. I want to make sure that I am a competitive candidate especially to the millennial population who I will be working on the next series of my career. I was successfully accepted to work in Makati Medical Center and progressed effectively.

I started in the ward for 3 months and went to Emergency Department as this is the unit that I preferred to work with. After 1 year of serving Makati Medical Center, I decided that I am fully ready to review for the IELTS- English Exam. I transferred to VRP Medical Center, the same tertiary hospital but with a lesser work-time which is 8 hours compared to Makati Med’s 12 hour shift at times. I reviewed extensively for IELTS and passed it. I then started my application to the United Kingdom.

Eventually I succeeded my application in the United Kingdom as a Registered Nurse. I am writing this to encourage my fellow Filipinos who left nursing and settled with other careers because of defining reasons. I want to emphasize that there is a hope for as long as you dedicate your time to it. It was not a smooth journey but everything else paid off. To my fellow nurses, continue striving hard, DO NOT compromise quality nursing care to all our patients and to always find success in every journey. I wish that anyone who will follow these steps will succeed and will live a comfortable life. Please spread the kindness, because kindness is free!
